Club of Journalism at the University of Burundi : the first sitting rich learning

The Journalism Club has seen the light of day at the University of Burundi, through a partnership with the CEPID. The first training session, focused on the introduction to the written press, marked a promising start.

The training sessions focus on practical exercises.

This Saturday, may 10, 2025 marks an important step in collaboration between the Center for the Advancement of the Information and Development (CEPID), and the department of journalism and communication of the University of Burundi (UB). This cooperation is manifested in the animation the effective of the Journalism Club, a joint initiative to strengthen the practical skills of future professionals of the media.

For this first inaugural session, the students were given an interactive training on the theme of " The introduction to the written press ", hosted by Gilbert Nkurunziza, a journalist and experienced trainer from the CEPID, assisted by other members of the centre. On the program : the understanding of the structure of a journal, an essential message, learning to write, brief, etc

Students, already members of the Club, have been present in large numbers. Their active participation was particularly notable. The many questions they have asked have shown a real interest in the concepts discussed, but also a willingness to deepen the practical dimensions of the business. It is as if they were waiting for this opportunity for a long time.

The last part of the training was devoted to a practical exercise. A sound element to seven minutes, was distributed to participants, who were asked to extract information to produce brief. Once their short texts, several students were able to present their work in front of their peers. This was followed by a collective analysis, led by the trainer to correct, refine, and consolidate learning.

The beneficiaries satisfied

The exercise was well received. The trade allowed the students to identify their strengths, but also aspects to improve in their journalistic approach. At the end of the session, the satisfaction was palpable. For many participants, this first-hand experience marked a turning point in their academic training.

« This first experience has shown that the members of the Journalism Club can learn a lot in a very short time, provided it be well framed "says the trainer of the day. Several students have already expressed their willingness to engage fully in the next sessions, claiming that they will miss any upcoming appointments.

The CEPID and the department of journalism and communication of the UB commend this successful experience, which they see as a milestone promising. The medium-term objective is to make the Journalism Club, a true space of experimentation, creativity and exchange for the students ' future journalists, in line with the requirements of the business and the realities on the ground.
